Supermarkets across the globe are gradually becoming more dependent on Africa as a source of agricultural produce. Mr Geoffrey White, CEO of UK-based pan-African investment company Lonrho, who disclosed this said although the continent is still some way off from becoming a competitive manufacturing destination for global exports, producing products for the local African market is ‘‘quite attractive’’. ‘‘Historically, Africa has always been dependent on the rest of the world. The balance is slowly changing where we are seeing the biggest retailers in the world changing their focus. We have got a whole list of produce that we need to source from Africa because we know that in five years our shelves will be empty if we do not engage with African agriculture,’’ said Mr White during a session at the recent 2012
World Economic Forum on Africa.
